ghazals · Pankaj Udhas CollectionPankaj Udhas - the ghazal sensation with a velvety voice, a man responsible for the transition of ghazals from the connoisseur's patronage to a commoner's delight. A phenomenon that has had absolutely incorrigible teetotalers swaying to his tunes of 'Paimana' and 'Surahi' genre ghazals. Songs ranging from the heart - rending 'Chitthi aayi hai' to the tantalising 'Chandi jaisa rang hai tera' have not only held a special place in the heart of ghazal lovers, but also have withstood the onslaught of western influence on Indian music. Born on 17th of May 1951 in Jetpur, Gujarat, Pankaj Udhas took up classical and semi - classical music after graduating from St. Xavier's College, Mumbai. He made his debut in the then highly specialized and exquisite world of ghazals in 1980 with the album 'Aahat'. And he has never looked back since then. Not a mean feat considering the dearth of committed music companies, and a confined, exotic halo that characterized the world of ghazals. A whole generation of music lovers has grown on his ghazals and that's why his performances evoke a feeling of nostalgia and yearning in the hearts of listeners all over the world. Songs |
